Submission Information

POLITICAL ADVERTISING
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Entries may be submitted from March 16th through May 1, 2009.
  2. Entry form must be signed by the creator/owner of the work submitted, or a person authorized to sign on their behalf.
  3. Entries may be submitted via email to blake_johnson@politicsonfilm.com (in either .mov or .wmv format) or posted to an external FTP site. If ubmitting through an FTP site, please provide a username, password and any other download instructions. Entries may also be submitted on DVD. DVD should be labeled with the title, runtime, and name of the person or organization submitting, and contact information.
  4. Entrants must pay a submission fee of $25 per entry.

Political Ads Category

Definitions:

  1. Advertising used by or on behalf of candidates for political office.
  2. Advertising used to support or oppose government policy.
  3. Advertising designed to influence public opinion regarding any issue in the public domain.

Technical specifications:

  1. Advertising within this category is defined as visual/audio content distributed via television or accessed via the Internet.
  2. Advertising in categories 1 through 7 may be any length from 10 to 60 seconds.
  3. Advertising in excess of 60 seconds may be submitted to the corresponding category of best long format web video (Number 8).
  4. Advertising may be either color or black and white.
  5. Advertising may be entirely new footage or may contain images and sounds from historical, cultural, and artistic sources that have been assembled and edited to create an original piece of finished work.
  6. All advertising submitted must be in compliance with federal laws and regulations concerning the use of copyrighted material.

Who may submit:

  1. National and state political parties and campaign committees.
  2. Individuals who were candidates for public office in 2008 at any level; i.e., federal, state, local.
  3. Consultants, producers, and media specialists who created and produced ads in 2008 on behalf of: political parties and campaign committees; candidates for public office; and organizations attempting to influence elections, referenda, or government policy at any level.
  4. Organizations that attempted to influence elections, referenda, or government policy at any level in 2008; i.e., NGOs, non-profit entities, humanitarian and charitable entities, trade associations, labor unions, corporations, political action committees, etc.

Categories and Awards:

There will be one winner in each of eight juried categories listed below. Please note that by submitting work to the Politics on Film Political Ad competition, you are agreeing that Politics on Film may use that work for purposes of furthering the mission and marketing goals of the festival. Such use may include, but is not limited to, displaying the work during and after the festival as representative samples of political advertising in 2008; including the work in a compilation reel of political advertisements submitted (together with any introductory material created or added by Politics on Film to help identify winners, and identify the candidates and issues for which the advertising was created) to be shown to the general public; and/or linking and displaying the work (as part of the compilation reel) for viewing by the general public on the Politics on Film website.

  1. Best in Show (Among entries for 2008 federal, statewide, or local election ads.)
  2. Best Ad for a Political Party or a Political Philosophy in 2008(Among entries for both federal and state Republican, Democratic, independent, or Third parties.)
  3. Most Effective Comparison Ad in 2008
  4. Most Effective Use of Humor in 2008
  5. Most Effective Use of Animation/FX/Graphics in 2008
  6. Most Effective Presentation of an Issue in 2008
  7. Best ad you made that never aired
  8. Best long format web video
